timed assesment

Designer-Naomi Parson
Hair Stylist-Georgina Baird

When looking at Naomi's design I felt confident and capable of doing it, we added to it in the test run of the assessment and the outcome was amazing. however on the day of the assessment things didn't really go to plan! I placed the parting to closes to the canter, and when I realised this to rectifie it I lost a valuable amount of time.
I am really disappointed in my hair assessment, because I know I can do a thousand times better especially as hair is like second nature to me. I also feel as if I let my partner down in the proses.
Iv learnt from this to just take to blows in my stride and to give myself enough time for any complications that may arise.

pictures from practice to the timed assessment
I was really pleased with this.

timed assesment

Designer- Georgina Baird

The run up to the timed assessment myself and Naomi had a fare share of practice on each other which helped immensely. Naomi was really calm, and took my design in her stride and the execution of it was really good. we expanded on my design by twisting a couple of plaits around my neck just to give the design an extra edge as it felt even with the huge crown that it was still missing something.
i think looking back on it know my design didn't really have the in depth difficulty compared to others, but a lot of time was preparing the hair and trying to get it to stay slick against my head.I really enjoyed working along side with Naomi as we both helped each other expand on our designs and ideas and its refreshing to partner up with someone who isn't scared to take my ideas in there stride.

practice for timed assesment

Practice for timed assessments are this week, its daunting in two ways, first its proof that our first semester has flown by right before my eyes and second i'm dramatically trying to horn all the skills learnt over the last weeks and throw them in to my creating and designs.

So me and Naomi set to work on her design. It was really fun to actually feel like I can be creative this week and not necessarily follow the guidelines. Naomi wasn't so sure of her design so we had a play around and were both really chuffed with the out come.

Heres some pics of the first attempt. She's a really good partner to have, she's really easy and clear in her instructions and that is just valuable at a time like this!

Queen Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett), Tilbury Speech

this part in the film really is my fav, you see Elizabeth in her finest and strongest here. Her hair has a warrior feel to it, and also is a screaming ad to everyone that she is "the virgin queen".

My final hair design step by step

The first portrait of Elizabeth I on her coronation and also Dolce and Gabbana inspires my finale design.
I really have a love for avant garde hair and feel it shows though my designs and out come.

·      Start with making a perfect section though the middle
·      With the first side section to the ear, use Bobbie pins to secure flat to the head. This will be sprayed down and twisted into place so the section needs to be neat!
·      Half this section to ensure the hair is saturated with water and hairspray
·      Once done blast off and move on to the second section
·      Repeat on other side.
·      With crimpers go though the rest of the hair
·      Then back comb
·      Add three messy plaits
·      And finally add the crown

Contempary inspiration

For my contemporary inspiration i'm using Lady Gaga, here at the glamour womens awards she is wearing one of Thom Browns outfits from his spring'14 collection that i have blogged about on a previous post. She also has the resemblance of the Elizabethan portrait iv chosen as my elizabethan inspiration.
I really want to go in a different direction for my hair design. I'm a bit bored of seeing the typical heart shape hair up so i'm thinking of having hair down centre parting and a lot of frizz going on.

inspirations for finale design and designs

After researching both contemporary and traditional Elizabethan looks i've reached a point in my design ideas were I want to portray both venerability and virginaty with an underling of richness in the final outcome.

So very different to that of the tony and guy aventgarde hair styles but i love the slickness and center parting.

WK 6 CREAT A LOOK FROM PICTURE USING SKILLS LEARNT

We were given a series of images in class in which we had to recreate a traditional look from.
As iv struggled with creating the heart shape I really wanted to give it another go on Naomi’s hair. I also incorporated curls at the back for a finish.

Historical elizabethan inspiration

When researching portraits on which inspire my designs for the timed assessment I was really drawn to this. This portrait is very different from her many, as her hairs down and she looks almost vulnerable
This portrait is from Elizabeth I coronation and was painted for her suiters with her hair down to show she's at an age to marry. Having hair down was avery symbolic as it was deemed a sign of virginaity and not being married.

Backcombing and wiggle plait

Such an easy and quick way to transform the hair, the wiggle plait.
I really like the effect it gives and can imagine it being the main focs of a hair up on a lady in waiting!

PADDING ON NAOMI'S HAIR

In todays lesson iv used padding on Naomi's head to create the heart shaped look with frizzing and crimping. Im really happy with the out come i felt its a lot easier working on a humans head rather then dolls hair.

Once i finished Naomi tried it out on me!

Padding and rats on dolls

In class this week we have been padding hair on dolls heads and making a cirmetrical hairstyle using the frizzing and curling techniques that we have learnt in the last couple of weeks. so heres my first attempt. Not very cirmetrical (its a lot harder then you think)

This week I also found out my partner for swapping our designs is Naomi....i'm so happy about this as her hair is very simular to mine in both colour and length ...........and i'm not joking when I say we have thick hair!

Frizzing and curling

This week we have been learning and perfecting the crimping, frizzing and curling techniques. I wont lie the frizzing is just like a bad 80s nightmare and I was apprehensive to even try and make it look good! However I casually ate my words by the end of class as I learnt its not just a great technique to use for hight, but also the effect with padding actually dose the job very nicely!

The ever so glorious Thom Browne

I just couldn't help myself and had to blog about the amazing Thom Browne and his inspirational spring '14 collection. His inspiration behind the collection is "Crazy Elizabethan Clowns". I'm in love this off the wall collection that SCREAMS Elizabethan, with the high powdery hair and pearl incrusted red nests holding in buns, it's an elizabethan orgasm and I'm slightly excited by it!
It really feels like a reflection on the great Alexander McQueen's work, but holds it own never less.
So here is my contemporary picture for our frizzing class, I'm just too excited to share it!!

Plaiting and buns on dolls heads

So this week we practised plaiting, fishtails, french plaits and buns without using a "bun".
in all honesty I had no problems with any of this as i'm a qualified hairdresser so its second nature to me, however its always great to practise and try different techniques to achieve the look. I'm very happy with all the out comes from my first attempt.

With Helen later on in the week we thad a go at achieving a look with the techniques learnt, i remembered a picture of a Elizabethan hat I researched that had plaits and ribbon's running around the head so i tried to recreated my version of the look......ok so it wasn't amazing but not bad first attempt!

my first attempt in class of a fish tail, i really like this look, its quite controversial, you can mess it up of a beachy look or keep it tidy

So as you can see iv intwined 4 plaits that run around the head, not a great first attempt but I think with practice the effect will be quite nice.
